Spirit

Spirit was never just a horse—he was a presence. A 27-year-old Dun Kiger Mustang with a heart of gold, he carried a legacy as powerful as his spirit. As the son of the Kiger Mustang who inspired Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, he embodied that same curiosity, bravery, and soulful intelligence that captured hearts around the world.

Raised with love from just six months old, Spirit shared a lifetime of adventures with his devoted owner. From peaceful trail rides to the elegance of cowboy dressage shows, he was a trusted partner and loyal companion. When his owner became ill, she made the incredibly difficult decision to place him in our care—ensuring he would remain safe, loved, and never alone.

Spirit came to us in his senior years, facing a new challenge: the gradual loss of his eyesight. But even as his vision faded, his inner light never did.

He was deeply communicative—smart, sensitive, and expressive in the gentlest ways. He would guide us to the perfect scratch spot, rest his head softly against our chest for quiet affection, and let us know when he needed reassurance. Though his sight was limited, he continued to move through life with grace. During the day, he could still see enough to wander the pasture with his herd, and at night, he adapted beautifully—learning to follow the steady presence of another horse or the sound of a trusted human voice.

Spirit faced every change with courage.

He was well cared for, but like many senior horses, he lived with Cushing’s disease. Despite his age and vision challenges, he remained healthy, engaged, and full of life.

We had hoped to find Spirit a very special home—one suited to his needs, ideally with another gentle gelding and a person or family who would cherish him and help him feel safe and secure in his golden years.

In August 2025, Spirit passed peacefully of natural causes.

He left behind a space that cannot be filled—but also a legacy of love, resilience, and deep connection. Those who knew him understood just how special he was. He had a way of reaching into your heart and staying there.

Rest in peace, sweet Spirit. You were deeply loved, and you will be profoundly missed. Your story will continue to inspire all who believe in the quiet strength and beauty of horses like you.
