Rescuing Horses in Nevada County: Giving Forgotten Horses a Second Chance

Every horse deserves safety, compassion, and the opportunity to thrive. At Sundance Horse Rescue & Sanctuary, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Nevada County, California, we are dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming horses that have experienced neglect, abuse, abandonment, owner surrender, or other challenging circumstances. Our focus on horse rehabilitation helps each horse recover physically and emotionally.

Since 2021, Sundance Horse Rescue & Sanctuary has helped more than 150 horses find safety, healing, and hope. As a 100% volunteer-supported organization, we are committed to ensuring that every horse receives the care, dignity, and second chance they deserve.

The Need for Horse Rescue in Nevada County

Nevada County is home to a vibrant equestrian community, beautiful rural landscapes, and thousands of horses. Yet even in horse-friendly communities such as Penn Valley, Grass Valley, Nevada City, and the surrounding foothills, horses can find themselves in need of rescue.

Economic hardship, illness, aging owners, unexpected life changes, natural disasters, and limited resources can leave horse owners struggling to provide proper care. In some cases, horses are neglected or abandoned through no fault of their own.

As a trusted horse rescue in Northern California, Sundance Horse Rescue & Sanctuary provides a safe haven for horses facing uncertain futures. Our mission is to provide the veterinary care, nutrition, rehabilitation, training, and emotional support necessary to help each horse thrive.

What Happens When a Rescue Horse Arrives?

Every rescue horse arrives with a unique story.

Some horses come to us underweight and in need of immediate medical attention. Others require rehabilitation, training, socialization, or simply time to learn that people can be trusted again.

When a horse enters our program, we:

·       Conduct a comprehensive health assessment

·       Provide veterinary, blood work, dental, and farrier care

·       Develop an individualized rehabilitation plan

·       Ensure proper nutrition and daily care

·       Evaluate temperament and training needs

·       Match suitable horses with qualified adopters

·       Provide lifetime sanctuary when adoption is not in the horse’s best interest

Our goal extends far beyond simply providing shelter. We strive to restore each horse’s physical health, emotional well-being, and quality of life.

Responding When Horses Need Help Most

One of the most significant rescue efforts in our organization’s history occurred during a large-scale Nevada County animal seizure in late 2025.

Working alongside Nevada County Animal Control, HEART, veterinarians, law enforcement, and other animal welfare organizations, more than 200 animals were removed from unsafe conditions. Sundance Horse Rescue & Sanctuary accepted all the equines from the case, including horses, miniature horses, and a miniature donkey.

Many of these animals required extensive rehabilitation, nutritional support, veterinary care, and patient handling before they were ready to begin the next chapter of their lives.

This collaborative effort demonstrated the importance of having experienced equine rescue organizations available when emergencies occur.

Horse Adoption in California

One of the most rewarding aspects of horse rescue is helping horses find loving forever homes.

Through our adoption program, we carefully evaluate each horse and match them with adopters whose experience, goals, and facilities meet the horse’s individual needs.

In 2025 alone, Sundance successfully rehomed 27 horses, helping create new beginnings for both horses and adopters. These successes demonstrate our commitment to rehoming horses into safe and loving homes.

Every successful adoption not only changes a horse’s life—it also creates space for us to help another horse in need. These are the kinds of rescue success stories that inspire our volunteers and supporters.

Whether you are looking for a trail horse, companion horse, senior horse, family horse, or simply want to provide a loving home to a deserving equine, adopting a rescue horse can be one of the most rewarding experiences imaginable.

Sanctuary for Horses Who Need Lifelong Care

Not every horse that comes to Sundance is adoptable.

Some horses arrive with age-related conditions, chronic health concerns, physical limitations, or emotional needs that make adoption unrealistic or inappropriate.

For these horses, Sundance provides lifelong sanctuary care.

Our sanctuary residents receive daily care, veterinary attention, companionship, proper nutrition, and the security of knowing they will always have a safe place to call home.

We believe every horse deserves dignity, comfort, and compassion regardless of age, health, or adoptability. Protecting horse welfare is at the heart of everything we do.

Volunteer Opportunities in Nevada County

Sundance Horse Rescue & Sanctuary is powered entirely by volunteers.

More than 30 dedicated volunteers help provide feeding, grooming, cleaning, horse handling, fundraising support, facility maintenance, transportation assistance, and community outreach.

Volunteer opportunities may include:

·       Feeding and watering horses

·       Grooming and basic horse care

·       Stall and paddock maintenance

·       Fence and facility projects

·       Adoption events

·       Fundraising activities

·       Community education programs

Whether you have decades of horse experience or simply want to support a meaningful cause, volunteering is a powerful way to make a direct impact.

Sponsorship and Foster Programs

Not everyone can adopt a horse, but there are many ways to help.

Our sponsorship program allows supporters to help provide feed, veterinary care, farrier services, and daily care for horses currently in our program.

We also work with carefully selected foster homes that can provide temporary care for horses while they continue their rehabilitation journey.

These programs allow more people to become involved in rescue while directly supporting horses in need.

Looking Toward the Future

In addition to rescue and rehabilitation, Sundance Horse Rescue & Sanctuary is expanding educational opportunities designed to strengthen the connection between horses and people.

Future initiatives include programs serving veterans, individuals with disabilities, and community members seeking meaningful experiences with horses through equine-assisted learning and skill-building activities.

Our vision is to create a place where horses heal, people grow, and communities come together.

How You Can Help
