The Rewards of Running a Horse Rescue: Why Sundance Horse Rescue & Sanctuary Exists

People often ask us what it is like to run a horse rescue.

The honest answer is that horse rescue can be physically demanding, emotionally challenging, financially stressful, and at times heartbreaking. There are long days, emergency veterinary calls, difficult decisions, and constant needs that never seem to end.

Yet despite the challenges, the rewards are immeasurable.

At Sundance Horse Rescue & Sanctuary, every horse that arrives reminds us why this work matters.

Every Horse Has a Story

One of the most meaningful aspects of horse rescue is witnessing transformation.

Many of the horses that come to Sundance arrive frightened, neglected, underweight, abandoned, or uncertain about people. Some have experienced years of inadequate care. Others arrive after their owners experience illness, financial hardship, relocation, or life circumstances that make horse ownership impossible.

Every horse has a story. Some supporters choose to honor beloved horses through horse memorials, creating lasting tributes that help other horses in need.

Some stories are difficult to hear.

But some of the most rewarding moments happen when those stories begin to change.

The horse that once avoided human contact starts greeting volunteers at the gate.

The horse that arrived underweight begins to shine.

The nervous horse that could barely be handled learns to trust again.

Watching a horse regain confidence and discover safety is something that never gets old.

Giving Horses a Second Chance

Since 2018, Sundance Horse Rescue & Sanctuary has helped more than 150 horses find safety, healing, and hope.

Some horses arrive needing only a short period of rehabilitation before finding a forever home. Others require months of care, training, and recovery. A few become permanent sanctuary residents due to age, health concerns, or special needs. Caring for these horses provides a glimpse into animal sanctuary life and the commitment required to provide lifelong care.

Regardless of their circumstances, every horse deserves compassion and a chance to thrive.

One of the greatest rewards of horse rescue is knowing that a horse who once faced an uncertain future now has the opportunity to live a safe, healthy, and fulfilling life.

The Joy of Successful Adoptions

Few experiences compare to watching a rescue horse leave for a carefully selected forever home.

Every adoption represents countless hours of feeding, grooming, veterinary care, training, fundraising, and volunteer support.

In 2025 alone, Sundance successfully rehomed 27 horses.

Each adoption creates room for another horse to enter our program and begin their own journey toward recovery.

Nothing compares to receiving photos months later showing a former rescue horse thriving with a loving family, enjoying trail rides, competing successfully, or simply grazing peacefully in a pasture.

Those updates remind us that every challenge was worthwhile.

The Horses Help People Too

Most people volunteer because they want to help horses.

What surprises many of them is how often the horses end up helping them.

Over the years, we have watched volunteers gain confidence, build friendships, learn new skills, and discover a sense of purpose through their involvement with Sundance.

Horses have a remarkable ability to teach patience, empathy, responsibility, and resilience.

Many visitors arrive expecting to make a difference in a horse’s life and leave realizing the horse has made a difference in theirs.

Building a Community of Compassion

Horse rescue is not something one person can do alone.

Sundance Horse Rescue & Sanctuary is powered entirely by volunteers. More than 30 volunteers help provide weekly feeding, horse care, facility maintenance, fundraising support, transportation assistance, and community outreach.

We are also supported by donors, veterinarians, farriers, trainers, adopters, sponsors, foster families, and community partners who believe every horse deserves a second chance. Contributions such as tack donations help reduce expenses and directly benefit the horses.

One of the greatest rewards of running a horse rescue is watching people from all walks of life come together around a shared mission.

That sense of community is something truly special. Many supporters embrace the farm sanctuary lifestyle by contributing their time, skills, and resources.

Responding When Horses Need Help Most

Some of the most meaningful moments in rescue happen during emergencies.

In late 2024, Sundance participated in a large-scale Nevada County animal seizure involving more than 200 animals.

Working alongside Nevada County Animal Control, HEART, veterinarians, law enforcement, and other rescue organizations, Sundance accepted seven equines requiring immediate care and rehabilitation.

The effort required countless volunteer hours, medical treatment, transportation coordination, and daily care.

Watching those animals recover and eventually move on to brighter futures was one of the most rewarding experiences in our organization’s history.

Moments like these remind us why horse rescue matters.

Learning Something New Every Day

No two horses are alike.

Every rescue horse teaches us something new about behavior, trust, rehabilitation, communication, and patience.

Some lessons come easily.

Others require creativity, persistence, and a willingness to adapt.

Whether helping a frightened horse learn confidence, supporting a senior horse through retirement, or introducing a rescue horse to a new companion, there is always something new to learn.

The education never ends—and that is part of what makes rescue so rewarding.

Celebrating Small Victories

People often imagine horse rescue is defined by dramatic before-and-after transformations.

While those moments are certainly memorable, some of the most meaningful victories are surprisingly small.

A horse willingly approaching for grooming.

A rescue horse relaxing during a veterinary appointment.

A nervous horse accepting a halter.

A volunteer learning a new skill.

A senior horse finding comfort in a new companion.

These moments may seem simple, but they represent progress, healing, and trust.

And they are often the moments we remember most.

Looking Toward the Future

As Sundance Horse Rescue & Sanctuary continues to grow, so does our vision.

In addition to rescue, rehabilitation, adoption, and sanctuary care, we are developing educational opportunities and future programs that will serve veterans, individuals with disabilities, and members of our community through meaningful horse-human interactions.

Our goal is not only to rescue horses but also to create opportunities for healing, learning, and connection. Future support through legacy giving can help ensure these programs continue for generations.

Why We Continue

Horse rescue is not easy.

There are difficult days, heartbreaking situations, and ongoing challenges.

Yet every challenge is balanced by the opportunity to change a life.

The greatest reward of running Sundance Horse Rescue & Sanctuary is knowing that horses who once faced neglect, abandonment, uncertainty, or hardship now have hope.

Some find forever homes.

Some find friendship.

Some find sanctuary.

All find compassion.

That is why we continue.

And that is the true reward of horse rescue.
