September 2020: Welcome Mayla and Misha! We rescued these 2 female kittens at only 5 weeks old. They had been taken from their mama at 3 weeks old and sold to someone who didn't seem to want them after all, as they were posted for sale again less then 2 weeks later. We paid the fee as we didn't want them to get into the wrong hands at such a young age. We are not sure why they were pulled so soon, but kittens should ideally be with their mama for at least 12 weeks so they get all the nutrition they need from nursing and so they develop good behavioral and social skills. Both of them vigorously try to suckle on our necks which just proves that she shouldn't have been taken from their mama so soon. We did the best we could to care for them with feeding kitten formula to supplement their wet and dry food diet and socialize them with both humans and other animals.
Of course, we fell in love with these precious little girls and named them Mayla (grey kitty) and Misha (black kitty). Now, February 2021: They are now 5 months old and we are getting them spayed and vaccinated this week. I want to send out a big Thank You to Sammie's Friends for organizing the "Cat Crisis Fund" that pays for spay/neuters for all cats in Nevada County. What a gift!
They have been indoor kitties so far and get along great with our other cats, dogs and Leo the Lamb. We think their social skills have developed well. They are smart and mischievous and loving. They spend their days chasing each other around the house, up and down the stairs, under our feet, over the back of the couch, through their cat tower, across our laps and then both crash out in a furry heap to take a sweet brief cat-nap. Then they start it all over again! Misha loves to play fetch and will bring her favorite mouse toy back to you every time it is tossed across the room or down the stairs. Mayla is the "sky hunter" as she will jump as high as she possibly can or practically climb the walls to grab, what she thinks, is a bird or a butterfly. It is fun to see their personalities shining through. They will be introduced to the great outdoors when they are a bit bigger, but will always be indoors or in a closed and secure shelter at night.
We know there are a lot of pics in the slideshow below, but how can we not take a million photos of these babies? Enjoy!
